What the law requires
Puerto Rico requires a public liability policy in order to drive: it covers the damage you cause to other people and their property. Without it, the car cannot be registered or used on public roads.
Own-damage cover, the one that repairs your own car, is separate: it is not what the law requires, but without it a crash comes out of your pocket.
Before you pick up the car
- Take out the policy in your own name before you take the car.
- Ask for the insurance card and keep it in the car.
- Ask what is covered and what is not, in writing, before you sign.
Where to ask
Each insurer sets the terms, the deductibles and the prices, and they change from one car to another and one driver to another. Compare them with your insurer before you decide.
